How I renewed my self.

Ten years ago, back in the Philippines, since I started and learned drinking, I used to visit beer houses and have at least 5 bottles of beer almost every night. After several years of drinking, I was feed up, but all my friends and buddies where drinkers, and I did not have the “self will” to discipline and control my drinking habit, it was a challenge for me to get away from friends and community who drinks every now and then, to an extent that my family was wondering whether I was an alcoholic or not.

Another was, although I had a job with a reasonable salary, I can barely save. I sort of existed hand to mouth, I worked, get my salary every 15th but before the 30th comes - all money was gone. A cycle, with no way out, that went on for years. It was like a trap. Not much savings was made over the years of working. My guess, it was all taken by the beer houses and San Miguel Beer.

So, years after my College graduation; my plans of having my own business, or my own house, or car remained just that: plans. Dreams unfulfilled.

I knew I needed a break. So, I resigned from my work; and I started looking for a new job, and found one in Saudi. Six months after I arrived in Saudi I achieve the following:

1. I stayed sober for 6 months (really!), not a drop of alcoholic drink entered my palate. I have no choice because alcoholic drinks are not legal in Saudi. Today, I still drink to the max occasionally, but not the same as before, there is more control and discipline now, hopefully.

2. Because, almost everything was paid for by my company, I saved 85% of my salary. For the first time ever, I had a huge amount of money deposited in my bank account that I started thinking about investments. It is so easy to think about business, or buying your own house and lot, or buying a car, when you have the money in the bank.

3. I was not only able to help myself, but also my family and others.

So in my opinion, working overseas (in KSA) was a place for me to re-start, to control my drinking, to save money, to have peace of mind among others, and most importantly to start fulfilling my dreams.

This experience, of course, is not guaranteed to happen to everyone, the experience of some OFW in KSA was/is a nightmare. Mine was for healing of some sort.

————

PS: As you may already know, I am now back in the Philippines managing my own business. I worked in KSA for around two years.

What happened to me in 2007?

I believed I am anonymous on the web, mocs, is just a pseudonym. But the web is the web, anonimity, is possible only to some extent. Thus, this post is full of honesty, to some extent.

2007 is my second year of being unemployed, by choice. It is an experiment. Years back, when I was working in Manila, being unemployed for 3 months would made me, possibly, begging on the streets. Today, being unemployed for almost 2 years, is no pain! Really. Not that I won the lotto, but through planning and hardwork.

I decided to quit Manila, and its environs for the simple reason of traffic, congestion, pollution, flood, and wide spread of something...I wanted a quality life. Life is short, and my more than a decade stay in Manila was more than enough. Sure, I visit Manila every now and then, but only for a few days. I never regretted the move.

Also, I worked in KSA for around 2 years. I quit, not that I am a quitter, only that my targets were met, and so I have to moved on. I saw guys there, working for 20 -30 years, sending their salaries back home to their families who barely knew them...anymore. Our modern heroes. I do not want to grow old, and be still a "desert slave". I do not want to be a hero, if being one is being an OFW for life. I value my time, quality time (it is the most expensive commodity in my vocab). So, I quit, move on, and never regretted the move.

Anyway, what did I do, that I can afford a claim of 2 years unemployment is no pain..any longer?

What I did was save and save money while I was in KSA. Invested them, you can read most of them in my previous posts for more details (June, July, August, and September to December 2006 posts). Being overseas, from the very start, I knew, was my ticket to economic freedom. Freedom not to work, not to have a Boss, to buy anything, to go anywhere. And most importantly, to do the things I like and love doing. To be a community asset, and to have the ability to help people.

For the past two years, I did not worry that I will have nothing. But, I worried how I can make more out of my assets. I worried about the people I helped, the scholars I am sending to schools, the farmers that need money for tractor repairs or fertilizers, the basketball team I sponsored and their games.

A shift in perspective. A moved out of the rat race. A quality time. Freedom.

So?

My assets grew by 400K in peso terms, this year.
Earnings from blogs (+10), for this month, would reach, hopely, 1K US dollars.
Purchased, and fully paid a valuable lot in the City.
I have fully developed the farms I owned. Production increased by 80%.
Purchased 1 multicab - cash. Will buy another 2 in February.
Agri-lending (the crown jewel), assets grew near 1M, liabilities, 300K.
And many more, hehehe.

What else?

2007 was a great year. It defined more the things that I want to do for 2008.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year....everyone.

Conservative wins South Korean Presidency

On the news today (from PDI): Lee Myung-Bak won South Korea's presidential election by a landslide yesterday, as voters backed the former Hyundai chief executive to revive the economy and disregarded fraud allegations against him. Lee's two closest rivals conceded defeat to the opposition conservative candidate, whose victory ends a decade of left-leaning rule.

Official results with 89 percent of the vote counted gave him 48.2 percent to his closest challenger's 26.7 percent, the biggest victory margin in the nation's democratic history.

The outcome of the elections reflected widespread public despair at President Roh's administration.

Koreans grappling with high youth unemployment, an ever-widening income gap and soaring property prices gave the candidate whose slogan was "Economy First!" the unprecedented mandate despite a looming fraud investigation.

Apart from the economy, Lee promises a firmer line on North Korea, accusing the Roh government of pampering the communist state with unconditional aid. He says he would offer it massive help but strictly tied to denuclearization.

What's up this week?

I don't know, but I feel depressed. Hay....when this kind of feeling sets in, its always an uphill strugle for me.

---------------

OK, good news for this week are as follows:

The country’s unemployment rate eased to 6.3 percent in October from 7.3 percent in the same period last year as gains in services and industry offset the decline in the labor force participation rate. The total number of Filipinos employed reached 33.7 million in October this year, or 1.5 percent higher than the same period last year.

---------------

Another is, the National Government may further reduce its foreign borrowings next year and change the borrowing mix to 75-25 percent in favor of domestic sources.

---------------

World oil prices slumped below $90 a barrel on Tuesday. US crude fell $1.66 to $88.97a barrel by 1710 GMT, after rising as high as $92.88 earlier on news Turkish troops had entered northern Iraq to fight Kurdish rebels. London Brent crude dove $1.84 to $89.45 a barrel.

---------------

And what's more significant for us, is this:

Electricity consumers can expect the “generation charge” component of their power bills to go down in the first quarter in 2008. The Energy Regulatory Commission is likely to approve a petition of government-owned electricity producer National Power Corp. (Napocor) to recover generation and foreign-exchange-related costs, which ERC Chairman Rodolfo Albano Jr. said would result in a rate cut because of the strengthening of the peso and efficient operation of some Napocor plants.

How much is the reduction will be remains to be seen. But at least, it is good to know that our electric bill will not go up, but down.

Peso 40:$1 next week? or will it break 39 something?

This is a reality every Pinoy, OFW or not, have to face. It is happening as predicted! I am sure many of our OFWs, particularly those in the Middle East, that are earning a meager 500 to less than 1000 dollars a month are already edgy, fretting, and frustrated. Many of them, I am sure are contemplating packing their bags and going home, either for good or just for the Christmas vacation, as it is, probably, no longer worth their sacrifices; while others are contemplating moving to countries with stronger currencies, or at least those that are not pegged to the US dollar.

On the news today, from PDI: By Doris Dumlao

The peso continued to strengthen against the dollar Thursday, surging to a new seven-and-a-half-year high of 41.10 to the dollar before closing at 41.24. Currency traders suspected Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas of buying dollars at the day’s peak rate of 41.10 to the greenback Thursday morning to slow down the peso’s rise.

“The peso might hit 40.80 next week but there might be a healthy correction because the US dollar is hitting oversold levels,” Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. senior vice president Marcelo Ayes said.

He said the correction might reach up to 41.60 but any dollar rebound would simply be an opportunity to sell the greenback.

--------------

If you are an OFW, what can you do?

1. Do not add 50 or 100 dollars extra to your monthly remittance.
2. If your family can afford to tighten their belts here, reduce your monthly remittance by 100 or 200.
3. If the corrections happen next week, cash in your dollars ASAP.
4. Negotiate with your employers for an increase, I am certain many of them will consider your request. The Middle East currencies are not really "weak", if they are not dollar peg; and oil is currently nearing 100 dollars a barrel, so they have more profits, more contracts, and will, definitely, entertain your request, than let you go back here. Think about it.

PS:

Probably, the Central Bank can no longer afford to buy more dollars as they already lost close to 50 billion pesos last quarter trying to defend the Peso.

For the stock market, it finished at its lowest level in over two weeks on Friday as investors took profits following a mixed session on Wall Street. Lets see what going to happen this week,

Forex Update, and the Economy

Mostly from PDI:

Peso

The peso opened trading at 41.69 and close at the intra-day high of 41.58 against the greenback. The peso is now trading at its strongest level since hitting 41.56 to the dollar on May 15, 2000.

The central bank, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), “is trying to temper the peso’s appreciation by buying dollars, but it’s really a strong season for OFW inflows,” a currency trader said.

Filipinos shunning imports?

Oh...really?

The lower-than-expected rise in imports came about despite the 7.1-percent growth of the overall economy in the first three quarters, beating most expectations. The slow growth in imports also came about despite the accelerated rise in consumer spending.

Lower imports, Higher spending, Weaker Dollar (which means imported good are cheaper?), what's up? I can see so many Made in China in the market? The possibilities are as follows:

1. The growth statistics by the government should be checked.
2. The total imported goods are cheaper i.e. mostly from China, hence the lower valuation. Higher spending? Mark up of importers must be high (they should be charged with higher taxes).
3. People are patronizing, more and more, locally produced products, than in previous years. I hope this checks out with the production levels of our local industries, because if they dont, then back to number one.

Which is which? You tell me.

Shiny Forehead and Hair Disappearing?

Are you worried your forehead is starting to be shiny, and hair starts disappearing? Then worry no more, the wonders of technology can rescue you from this problem. Do you know that there is a popular and successful modern medical technology called Hair Transplant? This is a medical procedure where hair strand can be planted on one person’s scalp or head. This will solve your baldness problems. The downside, as any great procedure, this will cost you a small amount of money.

So? Where can we get this procedure, and who has the reputation and experience to carry out hair transplants? One site I know is the www.drshapiroshairinstitute.com; Dr. Shapiro does hair transplants for men and women in Florida. If you visit his website, you can check out interesting things about hair loss, and what are the things contributing to the problem, for example, - nutritionally - many folks interested in weight loss or muscle building are actually contributing to their hair loss because of the supplements they are taking. You can also view testimonials on his site from his previous patients.

Expect a Construction Boom Next Year

This is what I think, at least, in my island here in the Visayas; where a mall (Robinsons), will be constructed from December 2007 until around November next year. Another, is the refurbishing of the 2 airports here. Also, it seems 2 more subdivisions are underway, probably catering, primarily to OFWs, and government employees.

Is it a boom? What about in Manila, Cebu and Mindanao?

From the news today (PDI):

Due to lack of readily available office space, shopping malls are becoming the best alternative for business process outsourcing sites, according to the head of call center operator TeleTech.

In an interview, Maulik Parekh, TeleTech's general manager for Asia covering Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines, said six out of the company's 10 facilities are located in malls.

Parekh announced TeleTech will open two more centers early next year, likewise located in malls. One will be at SM mall in San Fernando, Pampanga and the other in Robinson's mall in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

These new centers will house 1,700 and 1,000 seats, respectively, according to Parekh.

------------

So? Do I need to say more? The OFWs surged this year, and they need house and lots. More Malls are being constructed....to entice the dollars. I am really confused? People say "naghihirap tayo, at marami ang mahirap" but everytime I go inside Jolibee, or any shop, its takes time for me to get my order. Hay....

Not all OFWs are suffering from weak US dollar

OK, I used the Yahoo finance to track the currencies as complaints are all over about the losing value of the US dollars, resulting in suffering of most OFW families receiving remittances.

Here are the historical exchange rates for four currencies and the Peso:

US Dollar in Jan 2007 was 49.5, and today is around 42.0 (Peso can buy more)
EU was 61 in May 2006, and today is still around 61.0 (The same)
Aus dollar, it was 37.5 in Feb 2007, and today it is still around 37.0 (The same)
Yen was worth 0.43 in Jan 2007, and today it is just worth 0.37 (Peso can buy more)

This shows that only OFWs based in the US, and countries whose currency are peg to the dollar such Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman etc. are suffering from the decreased value of the dollar.

But for those countries in Europe, OFWs there are earning still the same amount of Pesoses. There is no worry there.

So?

The situation is really not in the hands of the government. The problem is the weakness of the US dollar, and the government cannot do anything about the US economy, hehehe. So, for our exporters, my advise would be to export more to Europe, or Taiwan, Korea etc.

For OFWs, particularly in the Middle East, my advise would be to move to Kuwait, where the currency is not peg to the dollar, or any other country, such as Australia or Europe where currencies are stronger.

Yes, it easier said than done, but that is the reality.

Citigroup sees peso at 37.50:$1 in ’08

There...it is not only me. Even the experts, Citigroup for one, agrees with my forecasts. My earlier post titled 2008 Predictions and Forecast last November 22, I said:

1. The Peso will reach 35 to 38 to the dollar by December 2008.
2. More OFWs will go abroad but will ask for higher salaries in dollar terms, many will return to the Philippines.
3. Chacha will be back, and opposed. No success in sight for Chacha. Instead, positioning for 2010 general elections will start mid of 2008.
4. The economy will continue improving, more investors will come in.
5. As usual the GMA administration will be accused of corruption from all sides. Indeed corruption will worsen in 2008.

-------------

Today, it really is no brainer. The peso broke into the 41-per-dollar level during trading last Wednesday, with an intra-day high of 41.99 before closing at 42.03 to the dollar.

How much was it 6 weeks ago? My Post last October 23: Where is the Peso now, and others I said: The Peso today is at 44.115, maybe before the week is over, it will reach and firm up at 43 something. And will reach 41 by December.

So? Let us wait next week, where will it be.

Be a Flight Attendant

One of my relatives’ dreams is to become a Flight Attendant. She asked us what course to take in College so she can be a Flight Attendant. I told her, I do not know whether there is such as course as BS Flight Attendant, or whatever. What I know is that, you have to have at least a BS degree, most likely, public relations, I guess, or HRM. There are also, personality and height requirements, in some airlines.

Searching the internet, so I can help her, I found this flight attendant school. This site, International Air and Hospitality Academy, offers training programs for the travel industry including Flight Attendants. So if you are planning to be a Flight Attendant, I would suggest for you to visit their site. They are one, of the many, travel agent school or flight attendant school that will help you fulfill your flight attendant career. Getting a flight attendant training courses will help you get a job quickly because most of the commercial airlines prefer to hire job candidates who have taken this kind of training courses.

BH Liposuction and Plastic Surgery

We commonly hear about human rights, and basic rights. Right to life, to freedom of expression and press are the common ones. But, I also believe that everyone has the right to look great, beautiful and fabulous. It is not just a right for the stars. It is also for you.

So? Well…you can improve your looks, and make yourself look great by getting a plastic surgery. Where can you get it? One place with reputation that I have seen on the net is the www.rodeodriveplasticsurgery.com. The Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon and specialists are from the finest universities including Stanford, The University of Chicago, and UCLA Medical Center, Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery. They are considered to be one of the premiere centers for cosmetic operations in California. If you’re planning of getting fat removed from any part of your body, or if you are planning to have breast augmentation, then there is no better medical facility for you to visit than Beverly Hills liposuction.

The Peso in December

My forecast for the Peso before Christmas day, that is by December 24, is that, it will, at the least, reach 41.5 to the dollar. Strongest for the past 10 years.

Yesterday, the peso surged to 42.12 to the dollar on strong year end cash remittances from overseas Filipinos and foreign currency inflows into the stock market. It is trading at its strongest level since it touched 42.07 on June 6, 2000. The peso has appreciated by over 16 percent since ending 2006 at 49.03 to the dollar, and is by far Asia’s best-performing currency this year.

The influx of money is not year over. More remittances will come a week before and after Christmas; and the Peso, barring any incident similar to the recent Manila Peninsula event, would certainly reach 41 something to the dollar. It has nowhere to go...

This situation becomes more certain if we consider (1) the continued jittery over the subprime property downturn in the United States, (2) the American Express Bank, in its latest weekly outlook, said recession-like conditions would probably force the Fed to cut interest rates again soon.

Furthermore, Deutsche Bank chief economist Michael Spencer said “lower interest rates in the US, unless matched by cuts in Asia, will tend to add to the pressure on Asian currencies to appreciate as the interest rate differential moves in a direction that would tend to attract fixed income investments in Asia.”

So, unless the Philippines Central Bank do something to the interest rates, there is no where to go for the Peso but reach 41 something before December 24.

So? if you are a local forex player, what will you do? hmmm.

Consolidating Your Debts

If you have been following Pinoy X- sa KSA for sometimes now, you know that one of my mottos here is: do not spend more than what you earn. This is basic, actually, the first step that you should take if you want to be “financially healthy”, whatever that term means.

It is common that our debt problem starts with student loans, and it grows as we shop and buy more things that we really do not need. Now, if you are in deep debt, you realize that you have to do something. What can you do? I would advice for you to seek pro active actions to solve your debt problem ASAP.

I would suggest you seek Debt Consolidation Services. What is it? What it can do? It simply will provide you with counseling and solutions to your debt and credit card problems. For example: credit card consolidation would be advised to people who owns many credit cards, i.e. to close all their credit card but one. This way the debt becomes more manageable. Also, the credit counseling company will help you negotiate for lower interest rates. This example is just one of the many ways that can help you manage your debts.

Credit Card Debt Elimination would not only improve your financial health but also would enable you to avoid problems such as sleep disorders, depression, relationship problems, health risks, social issues and mental breakdown. We all know these problems could happen as a result of unmanageable debts.

In the pursuit of Age Reversal

My mother, whenever asked how old she is, always answers that there is no point asking about her age anymore as she is now counting her age backwards, hehehe. This started since she reached the age of 70, and that was three years ago.

Now, when it comes to Science, things we thought impossible becomes possible. Listen, recently there had been a breakthrough that is, a million times better than the use of cosmetics to hide your age, the use of surgery, liposuction, among others to stay young.

It is Age reversal!

The new findings are described in the Dec. 15 cover paper of the research journal Genes & Development. The key to the process was blocking a gene called NF-kappa-B in the skin, said the scientists, led by Howard Chang of Stanford University School of Medicine in California.

Scientists are reporting what they say appears to be the first successful reversal of aging, at least in one organ: the skin of mice.

These findings suggest that aging is not just a result of wear and tear, but is also the consequence of a continually active genetic program that might be blocked for improving human health,” said Chang.

Chang and colleagues had previously identified NF-kappa-B as “master regulator” of aging associated gene activation programs in humans and mice. In effect, the gene promotes the activity of an array of other genes implicated in aging. Chang’s team engineered a mouse with a gene that could counteract NF-kappa-B, but which was inactive by default. This blocking gene could be activated in the skin, though, by applying a special cream.

------------

I am hoping that one’s this technology becomes fully developed 20 years from now, (when I am around 50yrs old, hehehe); I already the money to pay for this special cream. I wonder how much would it cost? The market potential of this product is huge, so I am sure, research and development work to further developed this "special cream" is on a rush! Hurry up guys, before wrinkles starts showing on my face. I want to be reverted back to 16 years old!

What is Colloidal Silver?

OK, now tell me the truth, especially if you are from the Philippines or any country in South East Asia or Middle East. Do you know, or at least heard of colloidal silver? What is it for?

Until a few hours ago, I don’t know what it is. I search the internet and here is what I found: colloidal silver are some sort of liquid that had microscopic particles of silver in it and is widely used by physicians to treat certain diseases; and it works like a natural antibiotic. It is claimed that concentrations of colloidal silver have been found to kill a number of infectious bacteria. It is believed to do well to the immune system; kill disease-causing agents such as bacteria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, syphilis, scarlet fever, and shingles and even treat cancer. Colloidal silver is also used as disinfectants for train stations and public facilities including medical centers and hospitals.

Still curious? I would advise you to search the internet, ask your Doctor, or visit this site www.purestcolloids.com.

Venezuelan Referendum: NO Votes Won

This is a sequel to my earlier post on Venezuela.

I actually do not know why I am interested on events happening in a country half way around the globe. It could be because, I am interested on events that would affect the movements in the market i.e. price of oil, forex, metals etc. Venezuela is producing more than 3 million barrels of oil per day.

Anyway, on the news today: NO votes won in the Venezuelan referendum by a very slight margin.

From NY Times:

Voters in this country (Venezuela) narrowly defeated a proposed overhaul to the constitution in a contentious referendum over granting President Hugo Chávez sweeping new powers, the Election Commission announced early Monday.

It was the first major electoral defeat in the nine years of his presidency. Voters rejected the 69 proposed amendments 51 to 49 percent.

-------------

So expect a downward movement of oil prices in the coming days (correction), still it would really NOT go low, as everybody wanted it to go, because of the inherent weakness of the US dollar. Until some, if not most, of the oil traded in the world market are priced in a more stable or stronger currency, expect oil to be in the range of 70 -80 dollars for the whole of 2008.

Earn Money Selling Wholesale Replica Sunglasses

OK, here is the deal: if you want to make some extra money this Christmas you can offer/sell replica sunglasses to your friends, or at your store at a vast discount and easily get lots of sale and profit, of course.

Since I am planning to go internet shopping for gifts to give to loved ones this Christmas. I can only think of one thing for now: designer sunglasses from the leading brands. This is because most of the people I am planning to give these glasses are fashionable people who wants to look smart and would be excited and pleased to wear designer sunglasses from the leading brands.

Since I am giving them to a dozen or two of people, it would be advantageous for me to get Wholesale Replica Sunglasses , as they are, most of the time, sold at a fraction of the cost than most retail sunglasses would be worth. Since I am buying them wholse sale, I can retail the rest, perhaps on Ebay; or to my friendly neighbors, hehe.

Replica Wholesale Sunglasses look like the original deal. Besides when you have a really good replica, it does not matter whether it is original or not. My friends, I am sure, would not mind if it they are replicas because they know I am always on a budget – I just wanted to give them the best deal there is, and I just wanted to give them a bit of excitement and smile this Holiday Season.

Venezuelan Referendum

I watched CNN and BBC this morning and I was greeted re the news that Vladimir Putin is winning in Russia's parliamentary elections. I am not surprised.

However, another news that may affect today's market opening in Asia, particularly oil prices and the shares of Santander bank is the Venezuelan Referendum. It is currently being undertaken to:

1. Abolish term limits for President opening the way for Chavez to stay on indefinitely past January 2013, when he is due to step down.He has said he would govern for life if the people backed him.

2. Changes to allow the government to take over the central bank, expropriate private property in the name of "economic socialism," and gag the media in times of emergency are also being proposed.

Not only that, he also threatened Saturday to halt oil exports if he sees US meddling in, or after, the hotly contested weekend referendum!

Another is, he has promised to nationalize Spanish banks in Venezuela if Spain's King Juan Carlos does not apologize for telling him to "shut up" at a recent summit.

Implications of this is, expect a much higher oil prices on Monday. If you are into stocks, think about the shares of the Spanish Banks.

-----------

There....who says? we are in a lot of trouble due to the Manila Pen incident? Wait until GMA maid a similar referendum.. at least for the the lifting of the President term limits! Hahahaha.
